Inoculations:
If you're an adult, you won't need any inoculations unless you're traveling from a yellow-fever endemic area (the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America), in which case you will need certification to prove your inoculation status when you arrive in South Africa.
Hepatitis B inoculations are recommended for children up to the age of 12 who have not completed the series of injections as infants. Booster doses for tetanus and measles can also be administered.
Cape Town and surrounds are malaria free. However, if you are traveling to Kruger Park or other parts of South Africa, please check whether the area is Malaria free. Precautions against Malaria should be taken when traveling to Malaria risk areas. Malaria can be fatal.
Medical facilities
Medical facilities in cities and larger towns are world-class, but expensive. Medical facilities in rural areas can be basic. In remote areas, air evacuation is sometimes the only option for medical emergencies.
We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before traveling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.
Visum:
Most tourists from Europe do not need a visa to travel into SA and will automatically get a tourist permit when going through customs which permits you to stay 90 days.
South African immigration laws require all visitors’ passports to have at least two blank pages and to be valid at least six months from your planned date of departure from South Africa. The law is rigorously enforced, so please check your passports.
To make sure you do not need a visa, you can check the list of nationalities who are exempted from Visa requirements at the ‘home affairs’ website: home affairs
Creditcards and Banking:
You'll also find South Africa an easy destination. From the moment you step off the plane you'll start seeing banks, bureaux de change and automatic tellers all over.
Apart from petrol stations most shops, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards, with American Express and Diners Club enjoying less universal acceptance than MasterCard and Visa. In some small towns, you may find you'll need to use cash.
With a favorable exchange rate for many international currencies, South Africa is found to be a very inexpensive destination.
Drivers license
Please be advised that the traffic department are now enforcing a law which was passed in 1998 that travelers to South Africa wishing to rent a motor vehicle whilst in this country must be in possession of a valid "International Drivers Permit/License". Should travelers neglect to obtain this document before leaving their country of residence, they will not be permitted to hire a vehicle in South Africa.
Should your travelers be using motor vehicles, other than the hired ones, i.e. making use of a company or friend's vehicle etc., they will STILL need to be in possession of such license. Licenses will NOT be issued to foreign visitors upon arrival in this country. Travelers must be advised to carry their Foreign Drivers License as well as their International one.
Plugs:
In South Africa we use three prongs. Adapters can be purchased in almost every super market.
Items to bring:
We recommend to bring a good pair of walking shoes, sunglasses, binoculars, camera, insect repelant and a small first-aid kit. Just in case you might forget something, rest assured that you can buy anything here!
Phone
If you have a sim-lock free cell phone you can use this in South Africa by buying a new sim card with pre-paid airtime at the airport or any big super market. This is the cheapest way to make phone calls!
Internet
More and more, luxury accommodation offers broadband internet services and wireless solutions. However, if the accommodation does not provide this service (yet), there are many internet shops to be found in and around the larger towns.
Kids:
South Africa is a wonderful destination to travel with kids. Many of our accommodations are child friendly and provided with all the things you need when you are traveling with small children. There are many fun filled activities to do for kids around the cape. To hire baby equipment such as high chairs, prams or cots please have a look at Babylite: www.babylite.co.za
Local assistance:
If you might have any problems or questions during your stay we will just be a phone call away...
